Naudline Pierre: Two large Celestials dance. Their wings are spread, and knees kicked high in unison. Mist is their backdrop. To their left is a fissure emitting a bright light. Behind the dancers, smaller beings seem to be diving into or out of the radiating fissure. Gentle flames are everywhere.
To the right of the dancing Celestials, tendrils of undulating hair creep in all directions, radiating from three kneeling beings. On the rightmost side, a lone celestial moves forward into the unknown. What we have here is a crossing, a collision. A meeting of two worlds. Time has warped, and we’re seeing past, present, and future in the same moment.
But what is the viewer’s role? We perceive these celestial beings, and they perceive us. Or, while touching, one is also being touched. The image acts as a window, a sort of portal through which we can imagine what could be the edges of the past, present, and future. Our diffused colours and temperature blend and melt into each other: warm and cool, shifting back and forth.
A crossing, with the central figure’s hair acting as a type of record-keeping mechanism. Wisdom takes the shape of tendrils weaving through the image, binding time and space. There are many ways to enter this image, and those openings grant us access to its worlds. Let us turn our focus to one such opening on the left side. Here we see a burst of light. A tear in space-time. The light invites us to enter and exist alongside these celestials. In engaging with this work, we flicker between seeing and being seen.
