Hortensia Mi Kafchin: My name is Hortensia Mi Kafchin. I’m a Romanian artist based in Berlin. I could say about myself that I’m doing art since I opened my eyes, and in 2014 I graduated the University of Art and Design in Cluj-Napoca, later being part of the Paintbrush Factory from Cluj. In 2017, I moved to Berlin to start my transition and to remodel my new life, I could say.

For our show, House of Nisaba, I made this special work titled Fixing the Economy, and it’s about — it’s about, I could say, this entity that is keeping us all hostages, you know: the economy. The economic system acts almost like a god, like cabal. And all our decisions and actions on this planet are serving this entity.

As you see, my painting has two pillars, like the priest and the people on the stake, and the river of porn on which the AI is swimming is a S-shape. And if we take some steps back, we see that the main architecture is the shape — is in the shape of a dollar. Because everything serves the dollar, euro, money in general.

So, and also, it’s about those double standards that we all have. I mean, you know, around those characters, we can see that there’s war going on, and famine and poverty. But at the same time, the religious leaders are accusing the LGBTQ+ community and other minorities for just existing, in the end.

And those standards, the double standards, are very annoying, and we reached to a point where it’s ridiculous, because all those words and all those problems, like poverty, inflation and so on, are not generated — I could guarantee you that they’re not generated — by the LGBT+ community or other fragile groups, like migrants and so on.

So, this is my first political work, and the biggest until now, because usually I’m this kind of artist that lives into their own head. So, when I’m coming out, when I step out from my mind, I don’t know exactly how to handle all those problems, only in a visual sense. Because I feel that my only power, let’s say, it’s only about talking about this and representing this.

So this painting is the result of all my thoughts and fears and, let’s say, artistic education, in the sense of I try to keep my inner child vision regarding this composition, not to use any artificial world outside, outside tools to represent, you know, this flag of duecento, duecento, like almost a fresca.
So yes, please enjoy. And thank you so much.
